Thoughts on Morals

Writer: Cheyenne WiseCheyenne Wise

Morality is a social construction that came about from human beings, and without humans, it does not exist. It's a human invention like religion it gives people a purpose for why we are here and what makes the world turn. It gives people something to believe in and provides a set of rules to follow to provide a purpose for why humans even exist. This might sound cynical, but I believe in astrology and that if I have a terrible morning, it means my whole day is ruined - it doesn't make it true, but I still think it's real.

Cultural relativism - Culture is the beliefs, behaviors, objects, and other characteristics shared by groups of people. It could be based on shared ethnicity, gender, customs, values, or objectives. Cultural relativism refers to not judging a culture in comparing it to our own. Society as a whole should try to understand cultural differences, and practicing cultural relativism helps. There is not a right or wrong way of doing things; it is merely how society/culture is functioning/believing during that particular time.

Moral realism - Moral realism means that there is a moral answer to a question or situation, but we may not know what that answer means. The answer may not be straight forward, it could be complicated, and there are moral facts, but they are relative to something. Moral values from our perception exist outside of us. I think a way to remember the moral realism values is by thinking of what karma is - good actions cause good in return, but bad actions cause bad things to happen. Don't steal from your friend because the universe will make sure things are taken from you. The universe has an objective moral system, this cannot be proven or disproven, but people still believe in the power of the universe and karma

Moral anti-realism - There are no moral facts. It is compatible with valuing and doesn't believe everything is okay. It doesn't think that there is only a right and a wrong. Moral anti-realist can value something but not believe it is a moral fact. Our value is mind-dependent and does not exist outside of our perception. Values have to do with our beliefs and sentiments instead of moral ideals.

The main idea of multiculturalism is the equal value of all cultures. Multiculturalism does not mean cultures as commonly understood but rather as biologically defined groups. It is a politicized form of cultural relativism, rejects the idea that there are general norms with respect to both knowledge and morals. It pushes an anti-individualistic agenda that it expects people to agree with the perceptions, thoughts, and judgments of his group for his opinions, ideas, and experiences to be legitimate. There is a youtube channel that reflects on whether or not people of the same groups, like Christians, Asian Americans, Transgender people, and many other groups, agree on the same ideals or morals. Jubilee focuses on allowing people to have a platform and speak on things that might not be what others' morals are.
