Contractarianism originated as a political theory. The founder of modern contractarianism was Thomas Hobbes, and according to the moral philosophy of contractarianism, the final authority on ethics isn't the law, personal opinion, or conventional wisdom. Breaking the law is justified whenever a law is grossly unjust. Contractarianism states that actions are morally right if and only if they are permitted by rules that free, equal, and rational people would agree to live by. Hobbes's view is that we should obey laws our government enforces for the same reason that people in a contract should follow the terms of their agreement. The significant difference is that citizens agree with America is more implied rather than explicit. Contractarianism an attractive moral theory based solely on how it goes forward to explain the objectivity of Morality. Contractarians don't have to picture ethical rules as eternally true. The moral standards are outcomes of rational choice, tailored to specifics of human nature.

A prisoner's dilemma is a type of dilemma in which one party must make either cooperative or competitive moves in relation to another party. The dilemma is typically designed so that the competitive move appears to be in one's self-interest, but if both sides make this move, they both suffer more than if they had both cooperated.
Defect or cooperate?
No matter what the other person does (as you cannot control their actions) you're better off to defect to yield the most optimific results for yourself. A hypothetical imperative: a choice is rational if it gets you the most of what you what (you are an ethical egoist. Even if you are Mother Theresa, you are still acting to get the most of what you want - to get the good for everyone.

"In 1980, Turner used the profits from Turner Broadcasting Systems to launch CNN (Cable News Network). The critics were scathing. A 24/7 all-news network would never work. But once again Turner proved that, despite his often dogmatic approach, when it came to business he knew best. "I am the right man in the right place at the right time," he said. "Not me alone, but all the people who think the world can be brought together by telecommunications." It revolutionized the news industry. CNN cemented its reputation with its coverage of the Gulf War when, for the first time, a TV audience could watch a war in real-time, from the comfort of their armchairs." It doesn't matter if you like or don't like Ted Turner; what matters is that he revolutionized what media and journalism are today. He took a crazy idea and threw caution to the wind.
