Social media and social justice have become a melting pot. With hashtags like #BlackLivesMatter, #UnfairAndLovely, #SayHerName, #DefendDACA has pushed social justice movements to the forefront of mainstream news coverage through social media. Specifically, people that are minorities, students, and social justice warriors take to social media to use as a platform to voice concerns and comments about issues that are important to them, primarily if they're not being heard. Media continuously misrepresents minorities time and time again, like Michael Brown who was wrongfully killed by police. Black Lives Matter was nationally recognized after the deaths of two African Americans: Michael Brown—resulting in protests and unrest in Ferguson, a city near St. Louis—and Eric Garner in New York City. Since the Ferguson protests, participants in the movement have demonstrated against the deaths of numerous other African Americans by police actions or while in police custody. I remember watching the live streams in Ferguson late at night confused and not understanding why the police were being so violent towards people who were rightfully upset and peacefully protesting in the streets. Having social media at my fingertips allowed me to research and come up with my own opinion. I had talked about it with my mother the next day, and her idea of the matter was in an unfavorable view. Since I had spent that night watching Ferguson as it was happening, I had a vastly different perspective. The police were dressed in riot gear, stood in a straight line with shields and face masks in a standoff with protestors. Protesters that had a message of 'Black lives matter' and 'hands up don't shoot' as they blocked streets and demanded the world's attention for something that has been going on for far too long.
Enrique Dussel - *Modernity is a European myth-based of a dialectical relationship with non-European alterity. Modernity was constituted as a European response to the encounter of the "other" in 1492. Europe inaugurated itself as a "Europe" center of the modern world. Europe believes their superiority comes with an obligation to develop other places, can use violence to gain modernity, as modernity will emancipate victims. Modernity should be surpassed by trans-modernity, incorporative solidarity.
